The Grille at Gold Dust West (a.k.a. The Gold Dust West Diner, or GDW Diner because I'm lazy) has received high marks on this site before. I ventured back for breakfast today and was once again happy with my food. I was thrilled, however, with the music selection.
I'll get this out of the way so I can move on to the important stuff.
On this revisit to the GDW Diner, I had the bacon, mushroom, and cheese omelet. It came with hash browns and a "fresh" biscuit. Some French toast was also ordered, and arrived with cute little sausages next to it.
For starters, my omelet was big and had a lot of mushrooms and bacon in it. A lot. There were probably three to six pounds of bacon and mushrooms in it (figures are estimates, your experience may vary). There was cheese on top, but also cheese inside, where it truly belongs. The omelet was substantial and solid, both literally and figuratively. The hash browns were top-notch. They weren't greasy, but they were crispy. Two thumbs up so far.
I was flying high when I saw the ingots of real butter and packets of real honey that came along with my biscuit. Tasting the biscuit brought me crashing down - it was kind of like dense, old bread. If Popeye's biscuits are the big leagues, this thing wasn't even quadruple-A. That was a disappointment, but not a dealbreaker. The omelet plate still kept it together and gets high marks overall.
The French toast was similarly tasty. To be fair, I didn't eat enough to warrant a full review. In my limited opinion, it was better than the Nugget's french toast. The Nugget's toast was overly thick and dry. GDW Diner's toast had a better consistency and presentation.
And now just a word on price and service before moving on. Unlike the first visit to the GDW Diner, a Thursday mid-morning when there was NO ONE else there, today's visit involved about a ten-minute wait before being seated. The place was packed at 11:00 AM on a Saturday.
After being seated, our service was timely and courteous considering how busy the waiter was. Once again, we got the carafe of coffee to refill our cups at our leisure. It's nice to be in control of you own coffee refilling universe. You can be a Master of the Universe, like an I-banker of your own coffee. Or something like that.
Fortunately, you can enjoy this sensation of power even if you're not actually an I-banker, or even if you don't have a bank account! Two breakfasts and two coffees came in at under $15. If you happen to be in that "no bank account" category, you and the people you're with could probably get one coffee and share it, drinking out of the same cup. I'm guessing you'd still get the whole insulated pot for the table. Just be sure to ask your table mates, "We're all friends here, right?" before taking this path. That should do the trick.
OK, so what's all this about "the tunes," then?
I heard a drum beat that sounded like the Beastie Boys' "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn." This got my attention, so I listened a little more carefully... and it was NKOTB's "Hangin' Tough!" This is when I knew I was in for something special.
That's right, they have their own website, and they're still around! Look at these guys today. Look at them!
Still rocking faces after all these years. And in case you forgot (yeah right, like anyone could forget this), here's those same guys in 1989, when they were young and fresh-faced, right out of the boy-band machine:
...and this is how people "hung tough" in the late 1980's.
This was followed by Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something." After an unexciting "Pour Some Sugar on Me" from Def Leppard, GDW patrons were treated to this pearl:
Naturally, this brought up Sexy Sax Man and his imitators:
This kid is great. This is like a prank my friends and I would have done in high school if any of us had any talent:
I drifted away with George and started to wonder if I was ever gonna dance again, getting lost in my bittersweet amorous thoughts. As if reading my mind, the sound system at GDW then moved on to Tina Turner with "What's Love Got to do With It." To my delight, the music is piped into the parking lot as well, so it followed me all the way to my car
Love? Love that synth harmonica solo, Tina.
GDW: Come for the breakfast, stay for the tunes. Just try not to pay attention as you walk through the sad factory of a casino and see the Social Security dollars being put into slot machines.
